Use it for identifier formats, search behavior, and register-specific caveats. The live source of truth for coverage, pricing, data sources, legal forms, roles, and status values is the pricing page. Open the current catalog for supported datapoints, sources, identifiers, and availability. Canada (Ontario) is in beta. Check the live pricing page or contact support before relying on it in production. **`CA-ON` covers corporations incorporated in Ontario.** In Canada a company is incorporated either federally or in one province or territory, and each keeps its own register. The public record carries **no street address, no Business Number and no people**. Directors and officers are not offered yet: the register lists them only on a report. ## Company Identifiers ### Query Identifiers | Identifier Type | Format | Example | Notes | | - | - | - | - | | **Ontario Corporation Number (OCN)** | Digits only, without leading zeros: 1 to 7 digits for corporations formed or registered before October 2021 (e.g. `294967`, `1216372`), 10 digits starting with `100` since then (e.g. `1001216372`) | `1216372` | Assigned by the Ontario Business Registry. `/v2/company` accepts spaces and hyphens and returns the canonical form | A 9-digit number is **not** an OCN. On the Ontario register it is the Business Identification Number (BIN) of a business name or partnership, which `CA-ON` does not cover; elsewhere it is usually a Canada Revenue Agency Business Number, which the Ontario register does not publish. ### Identifiers in API Response | Identifier | Format | Example | Found In | | - | - | - | - | | `ontarioCorporationNumber` | 1 to 7 digits, or 10 digits starting with `100` | `1216372` | Every corporation. Active and inactive corporations | | By Ontario Corporation Number | `1216372` | `id` | Exact match. The register also matches longer numbers that contain the one searched; only the exact number is returned | Search is free. Only company data retrieval is charged. Search returns **corporations formed in Ontario only**. Extra-provincial corporations (formed federally, in another province or territory, or abroad, and registered in Ontario) are left out, and so are the register's business names, sole proprietorships and partnerships. Results carry the city, province and country of the registered office. ### Active companies only Search returns inactive corporations too (dissolved, cancelled, amalgamated). With [`activeOnly=true`](/essentials/search#active-companies-only) they are removed from the answer, from the status the register prints for each result. ## Supported Entity Types | Entity type | Search | Company data | | - | - | - | | Ontario business corporations | Yes | Yes | | Not-for-profit and non-share corporations | Yes | Yes | | Co-operative corporations | Yes | Yes | | Extra-provincial corporations | No | Yes by OCN, flagged with the governing jurisdiction; for a federal corporation, use `CA-FED` | | Business names, sole proprietorships, partnerships | No | No | ## Federal and other extra-provincial corporations A corporation formed outside Ontario that does business there registers as an **extra-provincial corporation** and receives an Ontario Corporation Number from the same series. `CA-ON` never presents it as an Ontario incorporation: * search does not return it; * asked for by its OCN, `legalForm.localName` is the register's type (for example `Extra-Provincial Federal Corporation with Share`), standardized by its own form (`Corporation`, or `Nonprofit Organization` without share capital); * `status.localName` is the register's `Refer to Home Jurisdiction`, with the standardized status `UNKNOWN`: the Ontario register does not hold the corporation's status; * `status.statusDetails.additionalInfo` names the governing jurisdiction. For a federal corporation it reads *"Extra-provincial registration in Ontario of a corporation formed under federal law (governing jurisdiction: Canada - Federal). Its own record is Canada (Federal), CA-FED; the Ontario register does not publish its federal corporation number or Business Number."* Search the corporation by name in [Canada (Federal)](/essentials/canada-federal) for its own record, directors and beneficial owners. ## Quirks & Gotchas | Quirk | Details | | - | - | | **City only** | The public record gives the city, province and country of the registered or head office. `legalAddress` carries those three. | | **No people** | Directors and officers are not offered yet: the register lists them only on a report. | | **Previous names** | Earlier names are returned in `legacyLegalNames`. | | **Incorporation date** | `incorporationDate` is the incorporation or amalgamation date the register prints.
