# Mauritius

## Start here

This guide contains public integration notes for Mauritius. Use it for identifier formats, search behavior, and country-specific caveats. The live source of truth for coverage, pricing, data sources, documents, legal forms, roles, and status values is the pricing page.

## Data Sources

Mauritius uses a single official registry as its data source. There is no multi-source priority chain -- all data comes from the CBRD.

* **CBRD (Corporate and Business Registration Department)** -- Operated under the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, the CBRD is the central company register for Mauritius. The online search portal provides company search, detailed company profiles, and printable extracts. The system retrieves structured data including company name, legal form, status, registration date, registered address, stated capital, business activity, office bearers, and shareholders.

  **Performance expectations:** Mauritius is slower than most countries. Searches take several seconds, and full company profiles and document generation take about 30 to 60 seconds. The Speed section of the pricing page has the current figures.

## Company Identifiers

<Tip>
  **File No. format:** `/v2/company` accepts the **CBRD File No.** and nothing else: a letter (`C` for companies) followed by up to 6 digits, matching `^[A-Za-z]\d{2,6}$` (e.g. `C117853`, `C61811`, `C067923`). Send it exactly as search returns it: `C61811` and `C061811` are different numbers. Anything else returns `400 Bad Request` with the expected format.

  The File No. is **not** the Business Registration Number. The BRN (`125473`, or `C07068818`) identifies a *business registration* under the Business Registration Act, and a company with several registered businesses has several of them — so it is not a per-entity key.

  Other numbers you may hold — a BRN, a File No. written without its letter prefix (`61811`), or an FSC global-business licence number (`61811 C1/GBL`, `217346GBC`) — resolve to the File No. through [`/v2/search`](/api-reference/search). Search first, then call `/v2/company` with the `id` it returns.

### Identifiers in API Response

Once you retrieve company data, the `identifiers` object contains all available identifiers for that entity:

  The response key is spelled `brn` for backwards compatibility, but the value it carries is the CBRD File No.

### Legal Entity Identifier (LEI)

GLEIF is the supplementary data source for this identifier.

`company.identifiers.lei` is optional. It is returned when the CBRD File No. returned under `brn` matches a registration or validation reference in GLEIF and identifies a single LEI.

The [LEI](https://www.gleif.org/en/about-lei/introducing-the-legal-entity-identifier-lei) has 20 uppercase letters and digits, ending in two digits. Coverage varies by entity; a missing LEI does not establish that the company has none.

Lapsed or retired LEIs can still be returned. Annulled LEIs are excluded, so the presence of this identifier does not establish current LEI registration status.

The match uses the CBRD File No., not a Business Registration Number or an FSC licence number.

<Tip>
  **Search resolves what `/v2/company` will not accept.** If you hold a BRN or an FSC global-business licence number, search for it and use the returned `id` — that `id` is always the CBRD File No.

<Note>
  **Mauritius searches are slower than most countries.** Budget several seconds per search (see the Speed section of the pricing page). Prefer a single identifier search over repeated name queries.

### Active companies only

Search can return companies that are no longer active. Each result carries the register's status, so [`activeOnly=true`](/essentials/search#active-companies-only) removes the inactive ones. Companies in winding up or liquidation count as inactive and are removed.

## Company Status

Company status is determined **deterministically** from the `statusCode` field in the CBRD data. No AI inference is involved for status mapping.

  The status mapping is fully deterministic with no AI involvement. Dormant companies are still considered active (registered but temporarily inactive). Unknown status codes fall back to checking if the code equals `LIVE` to determine the active flag, and use the raw status code as the local name. Mauritius returns `localName` and `active` only: no `statusDetails` object is returned.

## Legal Forms

Mauritius legal forms are determined **deterministically** from the combination of `orgCategoryCode` and `orgTypeCode` fields in the CBRD data. No AI enrichment is used.

  The legal form is constructed by combining the organization type and category (e.g., "Private Company (Domestic Company)"). The standardization logic is fully deterministic: `PUBLIC` maps to Corporation, `PRIVATE` maps to Limited Liability Company, `CIVIL` and `COMMERCIAL` map to Partnership, `FOREIGN` maps to Branch or Representative Office, and `GBC`/`GLOBAL`/`GLOBAL BUSINESS COMPANY` maps to Limited Liability Company. When neither category nor type matches a known code, the standardized form falls back to `Other`.

## Legal Representatives

Legal representatives are extracted from the office bearers listed in the CBRD company details. The extraction is **deterministic** -- no AI is used for role mapping.

  Director appointments identify the statutory board context. Signing mode and transaction scope require additional authority evidence. A secretary, auditor, registered agent or management company title alone does not establish general representation; a separate director or delegated appointment is needed. The published title list is a reference vocabulary, not an exhaustive register classifier.

  **Resigned officers are excluded.** Office bearers with a `resignationDate` are automatically filtered out. Only currently active officers are included in the response.

## Other Key Persons

The `otherKeyPersons` datapoint returns administrative, audit and service-provider appointments from the same CBRD details. Corporate service providers retain `type: "company"`, their legal name and appointment date. Resigned appointments are excluded. Secretary duties cover board guidance, statutory records and filings under [Companies Act 2001, section 166](https://mof.govmu.org/Documents/2025/Legislations/Companies%20Act.pdf); these duties do not by themselves confer general signing powers.

## Shareholders

Shareholders are extracted from the shareholder list in the CBRD company details using **AI parsing** for type classification (individual vs. company).

  Shareholder type classification (individual vs. company) is AI-inferred. The structured fields (number of shares, percentage, value) come directly from the CBRD. If the register publishes shareholders but they cannot be parsed, the `shareholders` datapoint fails as unavailable while `company` and `legalRepresentatives` still succeed. An empty array means the register published no shareholders, which is common for Global Business Companies.

## Activity Code Mapping

Mauritius does **not** return activity codes. The CBRD records the nature of business as **free text**, which is returned in `activityDescription` (multiple activities are separated by semicolons).

  The CBRD does not use a standardized activity classification system, and no NACE or ISIC codes are returned for Mauritius. The `activities` object is not populated.

## Quirks & Gotchas

| **Full profiles require additional processing** | Full company details and document generation take about 30 to 60 seconds. |
| **The File No. is not the BRN** | They are different numbers of different lengths (RT Knits: File No. `C067973`, BRN `C07068818`), exposed under two separate radios on the CBRD search. `/v2/company` takes the File No.; search resolves a BRN to it. |
| **Licence numbers are not identifiers** | An FSC global-business licence reference such as `61811 C1/GBL` comes from a different regulator, and the Category 1 licence class was abolished in the 2018 reform. Search resolves it (`C61811`); `/v2/company` rejects it with a 400. |
| **Searches are slow** | Mauritius lookups take several seconds, slower than most countries. Prefer one identifier search over repeated name queries. |
| **Date format is DD/MM/YYYY** | The CBRD API returns dates in DD/MM/YYYY format, which is converted to ISO format (YYYY-MM-DD) internally. Invalid dates (wrong number of parts) return `undefined`. |
| **Currency defaults to MUR** | If no currency is specified in the stated capital, Mauritian Rupee (MUR) is used as the default. USD is also common for GBC companies. Capital is summed across all share types when multiple `statedCapital` entries exist. |
| **Shareholder type is AI-inferred** | The CBRD provides shareholder names but classifying them as individual vs. company requires AI parsing. If published shareholders cannot be parsed, the `shareholders` datapoint fails as unavailable; `company` and `legalRepresentatives` still succeed. |
| **No activity codes** | The CBRD does not provide standardized activity codes, and no NACE or ISIC codes are returned. The free-text nature of business is in `activityDescription`. |
| **Resigned officers are filtered** | Office bearers with a resignation date are automatically excluded from the legal representatives response. |
| **Single document type** | Only the Company Details Extract (PDF) is currently available. No financial statements, articles of association, or UBO documents. |
| **No prefill mode** | `mode: "prefill"` returns `fast_source_unavailable` (422) and is not billed. Mauritius cannot be answered inside the prefill deadline, so request it in the default verification mode. |
| **No UBOs, no establishments** | The CBRD does not expose ultimate beneficial owner data or establishment/branch listings. These fields are always empty. |
| **Status codes may appear in multiple forms** | Some status codes appear in both short and long forms (e.g., `STRUCK` and `STRUCK OFF`, `WINDING` and `WINDING UP`). Both forms are handled identically. |
