# Ohio
> Country-specific identifiers, data sources, and integration details

This guide contains public integration notes for Ohio. Use it for identifier formats, search behavior, and country-specific caveats. The live source of truth for coverage, pricing, data sources, documents, legal forms, roles, and status values is the pricing page.

## Data Sources
Ohio uses a single integration against the **Ohio Secretary of State, Business Services** portal (`businesssearch.ohiosos.gov`).
Two channels are wired:
* **Ohio SOS Monthly Business Reports** (fast, primary). Free official TXT reports generated on the second Saturday of each month. They cover new filings, subsequent/amendment filings, and canceled or dissolved LLCs. They do not cover the full live register population. Used for prefill checks and company search.
* **Ohio SOS Business Search** (slow, authoritative). A live read from the public business search portal. Adds fields not present in the monthly reports: current status, full principal address, statutory agent details, and prior names. Verification mode reads this channel on its own, without the monthly reports.
**Mode-based routing.** Prefill requests (`mode: "prefill"`) are served from the monthly Business Reports. Verification requests (`mode: "verification"`) read the live SOS business search on its own, returning the most current status and statutory-agent data available on the portal.
**Report coverage.** The Ohio SOS monthly Business Reports cover filing events, not the full register population. Entities that have not had a filing event in the current or recent report cycles may not appear in search results. Use verification mode with a known Ohio ID for the most current data on a specific entity.

### Legal Entity Identifier (LEI)
GLEIF is the supplementary data source for this identifier.
`company.identifiers.lei` is returned when a company identifier has a unique match against this jurisdiction's registration or validation references in GLEIF.
An [LEI (Legal Entity Identifier)](https://www.gleif.org/en/about-lei/introducing-the-legal-entity-identifier-lei) has 20 uppercase letters and digits, ending in two check digits.
Coverage varies by entity. The field is omitted when no unambiguous match is available. Lapsed or retired LEIs may be returned; annulled records are excluded.

**Name search.** Search combines our cached monthly-report dataset with a live query against the Ohio SOS business search, so results reflect the register's full population and match the query anywhere in the legal name (not just as a prefix). Each result set is capped at 50 matches; use fuller query strings to narrow broad searches.
**Coverage.** Because the live register is queried alongside the cache, entities that are registered with the Ohio SOS but absent from recent monthly-report cycles now appear in search results. Under heavy load the live query can briefly fall back to the cached dataset alone; searching by Ohio ID remains the most reliable lookup when you already have the identifier.
### Active companies only
Search can return companies that are no longer active. [`activeOnly=true`](/essentials/search#active-companies-only) removes those whose status is known at search time; the others are kept. Name matches confirmed by the live register are filtered. Registration-number lookups, and name matches served only from our copy of recent filings, are returned whatever their status.
## Quirks & Gotchas

| **Monthly reports cover filing events, not the full population** | The monthly Business Reports (which back onboarding-mode company data) are generated from filing activity rather than a full-register snapshot. This no longer limits **search** (search queries the live register alongside the cache), but onboarding-mode company lookups for an entity without a recent filing event may still be thin. Use verification mode with the `ohioId` for the most current data. |
| **Authoritative mode adds fields not in the reports** | Live status, the full principal address block, the statutory agent name and address, and prior names are only available through the live SOS business search (verification mode). Prefill mode returns only the fields present in the monthly reports: the statutory agent name (no address) and a placeholder status. |
| **No officer or director roster** | Ohio SOS does not publish a member, director, or officer list through either the monthly reports or the public business search portal. The statutory agent is returned under `otherKeyPersons` in both modes. Its local role is `Statutory Agent`, translated and standardized as `Registered Agent`. This function concerns legal notices and service of process; it does not establish general signing authority. |
| **No shareholders or UBO register** | Shareholder lists and beneficial ownership data are not published by the Ohio SOS. |
| **No activity codes** | Industry classification codes (NAICS, NACE, ISIC) were not found in the Ohio SOS public sources. |
| **No tax IDs** | Federal EIN and state tax identifiers are not disclosed by the Ohio SOS public business register. |
| **Trade Register Extract included at no extra charge** | The printable Trade Register Extract (a PDF rendering of the live SOS detail page) ships with the company-data block. It includes the entity number, legal name, type, status, filing dates, principal location, statutory agent, prior names, and filing history. |

Legal form is sourced from the entity type field of the Ohio Secretary of State monthly Business Reports. The vocabulary is a closed set of 10 values.
